Your Former Employer Could Be Your First Consulting Client

A former employer is the most underutilized starting asset in independent consulting. Here's why.

Your Former Employer Could Be Your First Consulting Client

I spoke recently with an independent consultant who has never once looked for a client. She has four of them. Her largest is her former employer. Another came from a university friend who founded a company. Two more came through a platform. Building a practice sustained almost entirely on relationships and reputation is a genuine achievement — and it usually starts closer to home than people expect.

Why a former employer is such a strong starting point

They already know your work. There's no procurement cold start, no need to prove basic competence from zero — you've already done that, on the record, inside their organization. That single fact removes most of the friction a brand-new client relationship would otherwise require.

The bottleneck this doesn't solve

Institutional and enterprise clients, including former employers, often take months to sign contracts and pay invoices. That creates lumpy cash flow and long lag times — and when your entire pipeline depends on warm inbound from one or two relationships, you inherit their timeline completely.

Warm relationships and former employers get you started. Pairing that with an intentional outreach system is what creates predictability and control over your pipeline.

How to actually raise it

This rarely starts as a formal pitch. It usually starts as a conversation — checking in, asking what a former team is currently working on, mentioning honestly that you're building an independent practice and would value knowing if there's ever a fit. Most former employers are receptive to this when it's genuine rather than transactional.

Treat it as a foundation, not the whole plan

The strongest approach uses a former employer as a real starting asset, while running a steady, separate outreach process in parallel — so your income and your timeline stay in your own control, rather than someone else's procurement cycle.
