From Layoff to Independent Consultant: A Practical Timeline

Six months of watching savings drain, a few false starts, and one conversation that changed the direction.

From Layoff to Independent Consultant: A Practical Timeline

My own path into independent work wasn't planned. Right after a layoff, I spent weeks looking into non-technical roles at software startups — companies I had zero real interest in. No strategy, just panic-applying to anything remote that would let me move to Spain, hoping something would work out.

What actually changed things

The shift wasn't dramatic. I wrote down a list of organizations doing the exact work I wanted to do — conservation and biodiversity finance in Africa — and ranked them top to bottom. Then I found the right people at each one and, instead of applying through job boards, started asking for conversations and building real relationships.

The turning point

Within a month of starting that process, one of those conversations turned into a paid consulting project. The shift that made it possible was simple to describe and harder to actually do: I stopped hunting for an open job title and started asking what problems people actually needed help solving.

The messy in-between is the part nobody talks about on LinkedIn — the weeks of watching savings drain, the pivots, the mistakes.

A realistic shape for this timeline

For most people, this isn't a two-week process. It's closer to a few months of watching savings move in the wrong direction, several false starts, and gradual clarity that builds through real conversations rather than arriving all at once through planning.

What would have shortened it

Looking back, the mistakes weren't about effort — they were about direction. Weeks spent applying to roles with no real fit could have gone toward the list-and-outreach approach from the start. That's the gap coaching closes: getting to the approach that works faster, with fewer of the detours.
