LinkedIn Outreach for Impact Professionals: What Actually Works

Seventeen conversations in a month started with a connection request and a brief message. Here's what made them work.

LinkedIn Outreach for Impact Professionals: What Actually Works

In one month of pipeline-building for my own conservation finance advisory work, I had seventeen conversations with people working across sub-Saharan Africa — the region where I have the most experience. All of them started the same way: a LinkedIn connection request and a brief message to someone I'd never met.

Start with curiosity, not a pitch

The pattern that works isn't leading with an offer. It's reaching out to someone doing work you genuinely find interesting, asking what they're building, and mostly listening. In one conversation, I asked what work an organization was doing in conservation finance and whether they ever brought in outside consultants — only after we'd actually talked about their work, not as an opening line.

Let the opportunity surface naturally

The person I spoke with said they were lacking expertise in that area and that building it was a priority for the coming months — and that they relied on consultants frequently. That information came from a real conversation, not a cold pitch. It wouldn't have surfaced from a generic outreach template.

This is what pipeline-building looks like as an independent consultant — and it's fun. Speaking to new people about exactly what you're passionate about, and growing your list of potential clients at the same time.

Consistency matters more than any single message

One good conversation rarely converts on its own. What compounds is doing this steadily — a handful of genuine outreach conversations most weeks, tracked and followed up on — rather than a single week of intense effort followed by months of nothing.

It's not hard to start

You don't need a perfect message or a polished profile to begin. You need a specific person, doing specific work you understand, and one honest question about what they're building.
