Why Hire an Independent Consulting Coach in 2026
The impact sector is contracting. Here's why a coach shortens the path from expertise to paid, independent work.

USAID cuts. Sustainability rollbacks. Multilateral hiring freezes. If you work in international development, climate, sustainability, or conservation, you don't need me to tell you the full-time job market has gotten harder — you're living it. Roles that existed for years are gone, and the ones that remain draw hundreds of applicants.
What I see, coaching experienced professionals through this shift, is that the people creating opportunities for themselves right now aren't necessarily the most qualified people in the room. They're the ones who know how to tell their story strategically, package their expertise clearly, and build relationships with intention. Most people aren't doing that — and in a contracting market, it's costing them.
A coach shortens the path, not walks it for you
You can work out positioning, pricing, and outreach on your own. Plenty of people do, eventually. What a coach changes is the timeline: instead of six months of trial and error, you get direct, honest feedback on what's working, what isn't, and what to fix next — from someone who has done this specific transition and now watches other people do it every week.
That matters more in a contracting sector than a growing one. When there are fewer roles and more competition for the work that does exist, a slow, unfocused search costs you real time and, often, real income.
Why 2026 specifically
Organizations aren't just cutting headcount — many are shifting the work that remains toward contracted, project-based expertise instead of full-time roles. That's a structural shift, not a temporary dip, and it favors people who can show up as a scoped, priced service rather than a resume in a stack of applications.
The work that actually needs your expertise is rarely posted. It gets scoped in private conversations, often months before anything appears on a job board.
Independent consultants are positioned to pick up exactly that kind of work — if they've done the positioning and outreach to be findable when it comes up.
What coaching actually does
In the Independent Consulting Coaching programme, we work through five things in order: defining your offer, positioning your expertise against real client problems, identifying who actually holds the budget, building an outreach strategy you'll keep using, and converting conversations into scoped, paid work. None of it is guesswork — it's the same sequence, applied to your specific background.
If you're not sure whether independent consulting is the right move yet, that's a normal place to start from. A single Power Hour session is often enough to find out.
Want help applying this to your own background?
A single Power Hour maps your offer and your ideal client. The full programme builds the pipeline that turns it into paid work.
