Salary vs. Day Rate: What Independent Consultants Actually Earn
A $120,000 salary works out to about $545 a day. Here's the arithmetic behind why organizations pay consultants more.

Almost nobody actually runs the numbers before deciding whether independent consulting could replace their salary. They compare a known number — their current pay — against a blank they've never calculated. A blank always loses, so the job stays.
Doing the arithmetic
Start with a simple conversion. A $120,000 salary works out to roughly $545 a day, assuming a standard working year. Organizations that contract the same expertise independently typically pay $800 to $1,000 or more per day for it — because a contract carries no pension, no benefits, no severance, and none of the overhead of a full-time hire.
That gap isn't a rounding error. It's the reason you've likely watched a consultant walk into a room, do work you could have done yourself, and get paid noticeably more for it. The difference usually isn't skill. It's packaging: they turned what they know into something an organization could buy in a defined scope and price, instead of asking to be hired indefinitely.
Billed days, not calendar days
The other number people skip is how many days they'd actually need to bill. At a $150,000-equivalent day rate, 100 billed days a year looks very different from 180 — both in income and in the months of actual time off in between. Most consultants don't get to $200,000+ by billing more days; they get there by raising the rate as their positioning and pipeline strengthen.
You don't have to quit to find out whether any of it is real. Run the numbers first.
Why this matters before you decide anything
This isn't an argument that independent consulting is automatically more lucrative — it depends entirely on whether you can build a pipeline that keeps you billing consistently, which is a real skill, not a given. But most people rule out the option before they've done the maths, based on a fear attached to a number they never calculated. Worth doing that arithmetic before you decide anything.
