From Generalist to Specialist: Positioning 15+ Years of Experience
Broad experience is an asset until you have to explain it in one sentence. Here's how to compress it without losing it.

After ten or fifteen years across multiple roles, sectors, and geographies, most people's honest answer to 'what do you do' is some version of 'a lot of things, in a lot of places.' That's real breadth — and it's also the hardest kind of background to position, because clients don't buy 'a lot of things.' They buy a specific answer to a specific problem.
The breadth doesn't disappear — it becomes the depth behind the offer
The goal isn't to erase fifteen years of range down to one narrow skill. It's to lead with a specific, scoped offer, and let the breadth show up as the reason you can be trusted to deliver it well — the judgment, the pattern recognition, the relationships that took over a decade to build.
Pick the chapter that matches the market, not the one you're proudest of
Long careers usually contain more than one plausible specialty. The one to lead with isn't necessarily the project you're proudest of — it's the one where there's active demand right now. Positioning is partly self-knowledge and partly market-reading; both matter.
Nobody with 15+ years of experience should be filling in online application forms. The form flattens the exact thing that makes you worth hiring.
Use the rest of your experience as proof, not as the pitch
Your other roles, sectors, and geographies still matter — they just belong in the second sentence, not the first. Once a client understands the specific problem you solve, the surrounding breadth becomes evidence that you'll handle their specific version of it well, rather than a list that makes your offer harder to parse.
This gets easier with practice, not with more thinking
Positioning fifteen years of experience into a clear offer rarely happens by thinking about it alone in your head. It sharpens through saying it out loud, in real conversations, and noticing which version actually lands.
